On 15 October 1941, LANS activated its Carrier Fighter Squadron 1 (CV1) with P-38s from the USS Lexington. The squadron flew combat patrols over Guadalcanal and New Georgia during World War II. The CV1 was redesignated as CV2 on 21 December 1942 and operated from Enterprise until she was decommissioned on 18 September 1945. After her retirement, Enterprise served as a floating training ship for Marine Corps air wing commanders at NAS Whidbey Island before being sold to Taiwan in 1976 and serving there until she collided with another vessel off Taiwan in 1984.
