One was that the city’s population increased from around 1,000 residents in 1940 to over 20,000 by 1945. Another was that the town began to become militarized; businesses started providing weapons and ammunition to local units during the war. This increased demand led some businesses such as A&P Supermarkets and JCPenney to open their stores inside military bases so that they could sell products related to warfare. Another major change after World War II came about throughactivation of Army Air Forces units stationed in California (the last beingactivated on September 15, 1948). These units were re-deployed all across America after World War II due to shortages of personnel and materiel. InLos Alamitos specifically, this meant that unit 25th Engineer Aviation Battalion (Air Defense) was activated on December 3rd 1946 at NAS Beale AFB becoming one of 12 aviation battalions assigned directly under Headquarters USAF reserve forces organization activated during 1947-48 called "Aerospace Reserve Troops". The electronics giant Philips Electronics Corporation first opened a plant in 1984 near downtown Los Alamitos; it has since moved upstate to Southern California's Riverside County and ceased production there in 2001 but continues to supply components for many high-tech products worldwide through its subsidiary Unisys Technology Corp.. The injector manufacturing plant owned by Northrop Grumman which builds both jet engines and subsystems for them is located just east of downtown Los Alamitos off Interstate 5 about halfway between Orange County and Riverside County... [It] employs over 1000 workers across three campuses across four counties...[It] manufactures parts used inside Boeing Dreamliners as well as Airbus Helicopters... Northrop Grumman also dominates missile defense research with their participation in DARPA's X-band radar program.... Southwestern Digital Devices' principal facility here produces several types of digital video encoding devices used by Hollywood movie studios such as Viacom/CBS Studios,... Panasonic began operations nearby backhauling telephone lines into Southern California long before DSL service became available here
