The Los Alamitos Police Department has been a unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department since 1912. The department was founded as a patrol force to support the growth of the city of Los Alamitos. In 1924, the department became an independent agency and was renamed the Los Alamitos Police Department. In 1951,Los Alamitos police officers were first trained in hostage negotiation. In 1965, the department began patrolling rural areas outside of town. The department received its own station on High Street in 1978 and began using body cameras in 1984. Today, Los Alamitos police officers work with deputies from neighboring agencies to provide law enforcement services throughout southeastern Los Angeles County. The department also partnered with sheriff's deputies from Compton and Carson City in 1990 to create a task force that helped reduce crime in those two cities.
