Los Alamitos, California is located in the San Luis Obispo County of southern California. It is bordered by San Bernardino County to the east, Orange County to the west and north, and Kern County to the south. The population was 128,651 as of 2010. The area that would become Los Alamitos was first settled by Native Americans in 1769. The name "Alamitos" comes from a place called "Alamita" in present-day Kern County. In 1846, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna decided to move his army from Chihuahua Valley towards Tucson so he could attack Mexico City from behind. His army passed through Alamitos on their way north and General Kearny stopped them at what is now Alamo Heights Cemetery. On July 16th of that year, Mexican forces under Miguel Hidalgo attacked Santa Anna's army near Independence Hill and drove them off with little resistance. A smallpox epidemic started in 1847 and killed more than one hundred people in Alamitos; this event became known as the Alamo Creek Massacre because of the creek that ran near where most of the victims were buried. In 1848, Los Angeles was founded as a result of an agreement between Governor Manuel Nieto and Andrew Johnson after Norte Californiano (the predecessor to modern day Los Angeles) boycotted American efforts to gain statehood via referendum due to differences over land ownership rights between Mexican settlers and Anglo newcomers. When California became a United States Territory on January 3rd, 1850, it included most of what is nowLos Angeles City Limits as well as much of what is nowSan Marino Boulevard across from Pasadena Pkwy./Hollywood Blvd., making it part of neighboring Orange County for about sixty miles (100 kilometers). In 1861 during its annexation by Southern California, Norwalk changed its name to Los Angeles due to objections from downtowns like Anaheim which were then known as East Norwalk because they lay withinSouthern Californian territory but continued receiving mail from downtown LOS ANGELES whileNorwalk remained unincorporated. The only exception was El Monte – formally annexed by LA on April 27th, 1911 following a request filed by Mayor James D’Angelo – who petitioned for annexation because his hometown El Monte was still located within original Pomona county boundaries despite being surrounded byLA city limits since 1902 . In 1951 when Cumming airfield opened up new airspace above LA providing needed commercial air traffic control facilities during wartime against Japan following World War II USAAF Tactical Air Command RAF Station Elmendorf closed down there were numerous suggestions made for why ELM wasn't reassigned back into Pomona county ..... finally it was decided that nothing could be done short term and radar installation at nearby Griffith Park would have priority ........... until 1969 when radar installation at nearby Topanga Hills became necessary due to increased Japanese activity over Southern CA ...... topography has again shifted resulting in Topanga Hills becoming uneasily adjacentto UCLA & other large universities .............. Althoughnow officially within LA city limits (&El Monte included until 1911), residents continue refertoTopanga Hills locally AS if it constitutes their own municipality
