The Los Altos, California army gift history can be traced back to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The range became known as "Baca's" and continued to operate until it was closed in 1949. During World War II, a new armory was built on Signal Hill within the city limits of Los Altos. It served as both an airfield for bombers and naval vessels during World War II and later became home to the University of California's Center for Atmospheric Research (CAR). The arsenal eventually fell into disrepair but was saved by philanthropist Arnold Schwarzenegger who restored it over time. Now it is used as a gymnasium and is open to the public free of charge.

The city of Los Altos was founded on December 12, 1887 by George Reisman and his brother-in-law, John Davenport. The two men had purchased 1,500 acres (540 ha) on which they built what is now known as the Reisman Courthouse and Towers. They named their new town after Mount Baldy County, Alabama, where they were born and raised. In 1916, when other towns in San Mateo County began to grow rapidly because of World War I production shortages, Los Altos decided to stay put and develop its own infrastructure. In 1922 it joined with Contra Costa County to form governmentality within that county - an event that remains significant today because it made Los Altos one of the first municipalities in American history to enjoy comprehensive water and sewer service from both counties. In 1936–37 entrepreneur Donald Ecker bought 1 percent of common stock in Consolidated Edison Company (CEC). He used this ownership stake to become president of CEC's board of directors; he also became executive vice president until 1957 when he resigned due to disagreements over company policy changes brought about by President Franklin D. Los Altos is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 26,028 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. The first European inhabitants of Los Altos were Spanish Missionaries who arrived on horseback in 1776. They named the area "San Miguel". The first permanent American settlement was made by Captain James Cook when he landed on Santa Cruz Island in 1778 and named it after his ship, HMS "Endeavour". The mission was abandoned in 1824, but a small community continued to grow around it until 1871 when it became an independent city. Los Altos's history can be traced back to 1821 when Captains John Foy and Nicholas Bicknell founded a ranch called Rancho Los Nietes at what is now Spring Street and Broadway Avenue. From that time until 1861, Los Altos lay within Contra Costa County boundaries; however, during this time period there were no government buildings or settlements in the town itself other than those established by Captain Foy and his men. In 1861, following the admission of California as a state under Governor Humboldt, new laws were passed providing for citizens of newly admitted states to move into their respective counties without having to purchase land or wait for official notices; accordingly, Rancho Los Nietes became an unincorporated community within San Mateo County. In 1872 (by act of Congress), Rancho los Niostecs was patented to George Copley Pomyat who sold it to Narciso Moreno y Costilla in 1902. Under Mexican rule most Californios had left for Mexico City before 1906 due to problems with US immigration policies; however many stayed behind and continued farming while their homes were looted and burned by Mexican forces during that year's war against US forces commanded by General Winfield Scott Hancock. After World War I ended formal border recognition between US and Mexican territories ensued which led some farmers from Angelino Heights east of Vail Pass northward along present day Highway 1010 (then State Route 5) to found what would become Los Altos; this group also included Father José Gomez who began building Saint Ignatius Catholic Church which stands today on Center Boulevard south of Home Road near Presentation Elementary School). In 1922 Angeles Rivera purchased $1 million from Pomyat for development into what would become Downtown Los Altos although much still remains rural farmland today including parts of Spring Street/Broadway Avenues Corridor hereinabove mentioned neighborhood known as South Gate Village which runs northeasterly from current Spring Street corridor just past Home Road at its southern terminus all the way up through Park Avenue/Alameda street intersection then continuing easterly onto Park Avenue all the way down becoming North Gate Village approximately opposite CenturyLink Field located just east off Interstate 80 exit ramp) Moreno y Costilla renamed East Side Community Club later Plaza de las Americas Recreation Area.). A 1965 study conducted by consultant firm KPMG revealed that downtown could reach up to 100,000 people if certain conditions - such as more parking spaces - are met.; accordingly Mayor Gaynor appointed Planning Director Don Avila whose report recommended that downtown be developed into either office park or residential districts with 800-1,200 units each garment district style high-rise apartment blocks being built above ground adjacent lower-floor commercial corridors servicing retail traffic corridors running concurrently underground through subterranean basement Parking garages below surface Streets served shoppers coming out ot local stores only & restaurants bringing customers inside local businesses only While services like libraries etc downtown could continue unchanged resultant growth proposed annexation omitting annexed areas presently located thereon thus creating about one hundred acres vacant currently used principally for agricultural purposes residences belonging thereto consisting mainly 2nd thru 4thousanders merely leased long term Agricultural purposes grazing lands lying between roads leading theretoedit Presently annexation has not been approved pending further studies taking place Currently plans call for demolishing oldgrowth trees obstructing views southeast & northeast
Los Altos was founded in 1871 by Captain John H. Gold as the town of San Miguel. It grew rapidly, and by 1880 it had a population of 3,000 people. The town was renamed Los Altos Hills in 1887 after the hills to the west of it became available for farming. In 1912, the city of Los Angeles was founded on the former site of San Miguel and began to grow rapidly around it. In 1914, Los Altos incorporated as a city; its first Mayor was Arthur Denny. The city's growth slowed during World War II because much of the industry that would have helped make Los Altos great consisting of shipyards and other heavy manufacturing shut down due to war production restrictions. However, during peacetime business resumed slowly but steadily led by such figures as Mayor Jack Kemp and City Manager Fred Schermerhorn until1995 when Schermerhorn stepped down amid allegations he falsified records in order to get re-elected
