Los Altos is a small city in San Mateo County, California. It is located on the banks of the Santa Clara River, north of San Francisco and south of Palo Alto. The population was 107,191 at the 2010 census. It is one of two cities in Silicon Valley (the other being Mountain View) and home to many high-technology companies such as Intel and Apple Inc. Los Altos also has several hospitals including Kaiser Permanente Medical Center and Stanford University's School of Medicine. It began as a farming village called Alta Mesa in 1868 when three families from Santa Clara County moved there to escape the drought conditions prevailing at that time. The name "Los Altos" was chosen because it was higher than any other settlement nearby and its residents were known for their fine clothes, jewelry, architecture and landscape design skills. The first post office opened in 1876, but it was quickly renamed Alta Mesa because it had too few residents to be called an official town name. In 1913, Los Altos became part of the city of San Francisco through annexation by San Francisco; however, that annexation did not change the name of the post office which continued to be called Alta Mesa until 2000 when it changed back to Los Altos Post Office. During World War II, Alta Mesa served as a munitions production plant for USAAF/USN forces stationed around Silicon Valley; some parts remained Operable after 9/11 due to their wartime importance. Later on in life much progress was made within Angeleno society during what some consider Mayor Richard Riordan's "Golden Age". Some notable figures who lived or worked here include: Willie Brown (mayor from 1990-1996), Jane Kim (city councillor since 2003), Eduardo Sánchez (former mayor from 1998-2002), Gavin Newsom (Governor since 2014).

Los Altos is a small town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and has a population of about 25,000 people. The name comes from an old Spanish word meaning "the highlands." The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Los Altos were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his men who explored the coasts of Southern California during the 16th century. They named this area Cañada de los Cahuillas because they saw high peaks there. The town was founded by John Sutter on May 10, 1849 as an agricultural settlement on Rancho Rincon del Norte. On January 8, 1861, it became part of the newly created city of Los Angeles when Presidio Heights was annexed by Los Angeles. In 1912, after years of effort by Mayor J. P. Stevens and City Councilman Alfred Haines (D-Alameda), Los Altos became one of the original twenty-eight cities included in the new county seat district for Santa Clara County which was established under Proposition 2 in 1912. In 1924, Mayor Harry Bridges (D) designated it as the site for headquarters for his new political party called National Republican Committee (NRC). This made it one of only two U.S.—and at that time—municipalities to have its own headquarters complex outside Washington D.C.. NRC reorganized in 1952 to become the Republican National Committee before being dissolved in 1992 and its assets liquidated by Donald Trump's presidential campaign organization Americas Incorporated In November 2020 during The 2020 US Elections local officials announced plans to make significant changes to zoning laws so that wealthy individuals could buy up all or most of downtown without ever having to apply for permits or go through community meetings; these changes would allow large tracts near LACM arts Districts such as North Park Plaza & South Park Boulevard East into luxury housing developments with no need for public consultation or notification whatsoever
Los Altos was founded in 1868 by Captain George Fenton and his wife, Eliza. It was the first settlement in Alta California. The area now known as Los Altos became a part of the United States in 1853. In 1916, it was annexed by Palo Alto.
