However, construction stopped because of a lack of money; Mayer sold most of his land to other investors before finishing his home. Mayer built a new house on about half of the lot he had bought in 1872; this house still stands today and is known as the Mayer House Museum (). After selling his remaining land near Oracle Road in 1916, Mayer moved back to Apple Valley where he died in 1967. His wife Eleanor lived there until her death in 2009 also.. In 1907, when San Francisco became an international city with its own mail service, Los Altos sent its mail through SFMTA until 1971 when USPS took over. In 1904, Anza-Borrego Desert National Monument was created within the city limits by President Theodore Roosevelt; part of it still surrounds Los Altos today. Other nearby national monuments include Mount Shasta (1853), Mount Tamalpais (1912), and Muir Woods National Monument (1914). Los Gatos Mountain Resort opened in 1911 and remains one of the country's most popular ski resorts today with more than 2 million visitors each year. The original settlement at what is now downtown Los Altos consisted of two small cabin townships: North Rancho Seco and South Rancho Seco which formed around Ohlone Indian Reservation land that had been leased from Native Americans for grazing purposes beginning about 1800 CE. These early residents probably planted crops such as grapes and wheat near present day Mill Valley/Fremont Boulevard because there was no water available close by for irrigation or farming purposes. A crossroad known as "Old Spanish Road" led into these areas from cannonballs fired from Mexican fortifications during the American Revolution to warn American forces against British infiltration into southwestern California east of Sacramento River before the battle for Bunker Hill occurred on April 19th 1847 near Stockton Junction about 25 miles northeast of modern day Angel Fire along Interstate 5 south of where Lake Oroville now stands
