It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and lies on the eastern edge of Peninsula City. The area that now makes up Los Altos began as a small farming community called Palmer Station in 1887, named for General George Palmer who donated land to establish it. But by 1960saltadena had lost much of its appeal as a tourist destination due to demographic changes including racially diverse neighborhoods developing around it instead; waves of out-migration from Southern California; and more serious traffic issues caused by development in other parts of town including nearby Mountain View and East Palo Alto which had replaced Altadena as Silicon Valley's main bedroom community. nevertheless however some people maintain that "los altos" still retains its unique charm".
