The Los Altos Naval Air Station has been a Navy base for over sixty years. The station is home to the LAS-1D Sea Knight helicopter, which was first flown at NAS Miramar on December 5, 1943. It was here that Lieutenant Commander Leslie G. Willoughby piloted the first American helicopter mission against Japan during World War II. The Sea Knight helicopters were used by the Navy from 1952 until they were retired in 1992. The LAS-1D helicopter is still used by the Navy and is currently stationed at NAS Miramar as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear, which is an effort to secure Iraq’s oil resources. This gift history begins with Vice Admiral John Wray who purchased the Sea Knight helicopter in 1972 and assigned it to NAS Miramar as part of its Helicopter Squadron Oneirteen (HS-13). From there it went through several changes before being re-designated LAS-1D in 1984. In 1992, HS-13 was disbanded and their helicopters were transferred to USS Yorktown (CVN 79) for use in Operation Desert Storm. During this time, USS Yorktown flew two missions with HH-60G Black Hawk helicopters; one on February 14th and one on March 2nd. These missions helped defend Kuwait from an Iraqi attack and also provided support for ground forces during the Battle of Kuwait City. After Desert Storm ended, USS Yorktown returned back to San Diego where she remained until her retirement in 2006 under command of Rear Admiral Rick Jettison Jr.. In his memoirs, Rear Admiral Jettison wrote about his experiences flying aboard Yorktown during Desert Storm: “From then forward I would always remember those two HH–60G flights – both accomplished without any loss or injury among our crewmembers…the result of superb coordination between pilots and Flight Crew Chief Don McNaught [of Metro Airlines]. Our commanders had placed great trust in him during these critical times” With her retirement came the end of active duty for HMS Belfast (LHD 4), which also served as a floating airbase for amphibious assault ships deployed throughout Asia Pacific when not fighting wars or providing logistics support ashore.
