The Los Altos Navy Museum is a nonprofit organization that helps preserve and display the history of the United States Naval Academy at West Point. The museum has been in operation since 1978, and it is one of only a few naval museums in California. The collection includes both military and civilian items from the academy’s history. One of the earliest items to be donated to the museum was an Oldsmobile Cutlass belonging to Commodore John D. Stockton. Stockton was a key figure in building up the school’s navy force during World War I. He also served as superintendent of West Point from 1921 until his death in 1926. In 1978, Commodore George Dewey donated his USS Constitution ship to the museum. Dewey had been captain of the ship during World War II and he later became President of Columbia University. The Constitution was originally built as a battleship for Mexico City’s Navarro fleet, but she was acquired bythe United States Navy in 1944 and renamed USS Constitution after Dewey’s first wife, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. The most northerly point of the contiguous United States is located in Los Altos. The first people to live in Los Altos were the Ohlone people who arrived from Northern California about 1250 A.D. The Ohlone lived on Mission Peninsula and near today's downtown Los Angeles until 16 Shooters Bay Treaty was signed in 1821 by representatives of both sides after a series of disputes over land ownership between the two groups. In 1851, George Washington Carver moved his family from Georgia to what is now northern San Mateo County and began farming there. In 1861, while serving as colonel of Ulysses S Grant's army during the American Civil War, Carver discovered high-quality agricultural land near present-day San Francisco that would become known as Carver Valley. He sold some of this land to $1 per acre and founded what became known as Carver City (now part of Oakland). In 1903, Hernan Cortez established a citrus orchards around present-day Claremont Village and named it Villa Carnera after his wife Clara Eugenia de la Vega y Cortez y Pico (1848–1925), daughter of José María Carrillo y Salinas (1794–1860). When carloads full of oranges started arriving at Villa Carnera during winter months from 1906 to 1909, local businessmen formed a company called Oro Maggiore which marketed oranges direct to consumers instead of being sent through wholesalers. This Direct Marketing Orange Company soon became oneofAmerica's largest commercial orange growers and processors.
