During World War II, many local families helped contribute members to American forces fighting in Europe/Africa/the Pacific theater including those at Willow Glen Farms near Orinda where Skip James worked as a cook before being drafted into US Army Air Forces service at Rohnert Park CA early 1942-1943 He flew missions over Japan then returned home only to be shot down by Japanese fighters off Okinawa on July 21st 1943 killing all six aircraft occupants including himself along with his navigator Lt(jg) John Lantz Jr.. He posthumously received the Presidential Unit Citation for gallantry against enemy fire

Los Altos is a small town in California, located about 25 miles east of Pasadena. It was founded in 1868 by merchants from nearby Pasadena. The name "Los Altos" means "the high trees." The first post office was established at Los Altos in 1872. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality. Los Altos has a rich history that can be traced back to its early days as a small trading post and agricultural center on the slopes of Mount Wilson. One of the earliest settlers in Los Altos was William Ahern, who arrived in 1868 with his family from New York City. He built a cabin on Big Basin Creek and named it Ahern Station after his father-in-law, also named William Ahern.
