Los Altos is a small town in San Mateo County, California. The population was 1,604 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Silicon Valley and adjacent to Berkeley. Los Altos has a high-tech industry and many businesses, such as Intel and Apple (AAPL), were founded here. The name "Los Altos" means "the top." The first people to live in what is now Los Altos were Mission Indians who came from Chihuahua in 1839. In 1868, Russian sailors who had come ashore on Santa Cruz Island found three springs that would provide water for their ship, theetcha. They named one of the springs Santa Clara because it was near where they saw a clump of trees with redwoods growing at the top. After visiting this spring several times they decided to build a small village around it called Rancho San Lorenzo de las Pulgas (later renamed after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Clara). In 1872, Alpheus Bidwell bought part of Rancho San Lorenzo de las Pulgas and started building homes there. By 1888 he had built over 100 houses and named his new community bidwellville after him. This was an early example of suburban development in America which startedlewdly spreading through northern California during the late 19th century due to railroads connecting different parts of the state together

Los Altos, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 28,948 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Silicon Valley after Palo Alto. Los Altos is also home to Menlo Park, one of the largest concentrations of technology companies in Northern California. The first European settlers arriving in Alta California were Spanish traders and soldiers who reached present-day Los Altos in 1821. The area that would become Los Altos was part of Rancho Santa Clara de Asistencia y Producción (Rancho Seco) from 1847 to 1850; it then became part of Rancho Santa Cruz from 1850 to 1860. In 1865, an act of Congress created San Mateo County and gave its eastern border the town of Milpitas east of Hearst Castle on Upper Sonoma Creek. In 1870, during the Donner Party's journey through central California they reached what is now Los Altos and named it for their leader Joshua Donner because he had been influential in getting them started on their journey westward. The first permanent settler in what is now Los Altos was Edward Cady Wright who bought land near Mount Pleasant Road and Menlo Park Boulevard on January 3, 1872. He developed his holdings into a large citrus grove that produced fruit until 1918 when word got out about refrigeration systems being developed by George Westinghouse and his brother Charles Edison at Bell Laboratories near Palo Alto. That led to an economic turnaround for Wright's grove as new investors came online looking for fruit that could be stored fresh or frozen for easy shipment around the world

In 1886, Charles Goodyear established his company in Los Altos as one of the first American companies to develop rubber products into an industry that would become world renown. Goodyear's business would grow over time and make Los Altos one of the most important industrial cities in America. During World War II, Los Altos played a role in the deepest naval engagement of World War II when it became home to Pacific Fleet Headquarters during hostilities involving Japan andPearl Harbor. The city also experienced significant post-World War II growth with the arrival of new businesses such as Apple Inc., Intel Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., Oracle Corporation, Adobe Systems Inc., Toyota Motor Manufacturing Corporation (TMMC), Dell Computer Corp., Microsoft Corp., Facebook LLC, Googleplex Inc.)
