Since the early days of air force aviation, Los Angeles County has been home to one of the country's largest air forces. The Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) is responsible for providing essential service to this Nation's Aerospace Forces and economy through its many programs and activities. The AFRC was activated on July 1, 1947 as a result of the establishment of the USAF inactivated on September 2, 1945. It was initially called the Aeronautical Division (AD). The organization changed its name in 1951 to the Air Force Reserve Command when it became an independent branch of the military. In 1957, General Curtis LeMay became Commander-in-Chief, AFRC and divided command among two subordinate commands: Headquarters USAF (HQ USAF), which oversaw all reserve activities; and Service Commands Airmen Activity Support Wing (SASCW), which provided operational support for HQ USAF's mission. In 1961 HQ USAF was redesignated as Directorate-General Military Airlift Command (DG MAC). In 1966 Headquarters DG MAC relocated from McChord AFB to Eglin AFB FL where it remains today as Directorate-General Public Affairs Office at Eglin AFB. On November 15, 1948 Major General James E Turner assumed command of AFRC from Major General Thurston N Haltom who had served since May 1946 as Assistant Deputy Commander for Air Forces in Tokyo District Headquarters United States Army G4 Far East Area Department . With Turner arrived Brigadier General Percy W Kramarossi who had been with CG USAAF Japan since September 1945 flying Boeing P-47 Thunderbolt jets based at Fuchu Airport and Takamatsu Airport near Kobe City while stationed at Yokota Air Base outside Tokyo . On January 3, 1949 general Kramarossi relieved brigadier general Worth W Beal Jr., commanding officer Service Commands Airmen Activity Support Wing , with effective date January 4th . Lieutenant Colonel Jerald S Kapp also took over command of ASCW from lieutenant colonel Miles J Brown on that date until his retirement on December 20th . Captain Harry L Snyder succeeded Snyder on promotion to captain on October 21st after serving in a variety of jobs within DHQ AFCAM including Plans Director G3/5 Operations Research Office before being assigned concurrently with Captain Snyder’s unit Materiel Management Branch – Aircraft Maintenance Shop One -supporting maintenance functions for 12 squadron KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft operated by 519th TFW at Kadena AB Okinawa Prefecture ). Captain Snyder remained in charge until reassigned back to MMLB Branch - Aircraft Maintenance Shop One -on December 14th ..... At present there are three major commands under brigade level command viz 1) Directorategeneral Military Airlift Command headed by Lt Col Harry L Snyder; 2) Service Commands Airmen Activity Support Wing headed by Capt Harry L Snyder; 3) DirectorateGeneral Public Affairs Office headed by Lt Col James E Turner
