The Los Angeles Army National Guard was activated in 1911 as part of the California National Guard. The first unit to deploy to World War I was the 1st Battalion, Los Angeles Infantry Regiment. The battalion fought in Mexico and France before arriving in England on October 14, 1914. They were quartered with the Royal Field Artillery at Woolwich Arsenal until September 1916 when they were moved to billets near Ypres on the Somme battlefield. On April 6, 1917, they relieved the 2nd Battalion, London Irish Rifles (LIR) at Fricourt Ridge during their first major offensive against German forces during World War I. The LA AAGN also deployed for World War II as part of Operation Torch which led to Axis victory over Allied forces in North Africa and Europe. After the war ended, units from both military branches continued to serve together through various peacetime missions including roles in Desert Storm and Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Today, both branches of the LA ARMY continue to serve together through training and deployment operations around Southern California. In 2017, there were more than 5500 soldiers serving with both branches of the LA ARMY across 45 counties throughout California; this number is expected to grow by 50% over 2018 as new enlistments are announced throughout our state!
