The Los Angeles Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to World War I. The first unit in the state was activated on November 17, 1917, when the California Infantry Training Battalion was organized at Fort Huachuca. In 1922, the Guard became an infantry regiment and then an armored regiment. The 1st Armored Regiment was activated on September 16, 1944 as part of the United States Army Forces Europe (USAFE) and served with distinction during the war. The 1st Armored Regiment was redesignated as the 2nd Armored Regiment in 1959 and served until it disbanded in 1971. The Los Angeles Army National Guard is composed of over 32,000 soldiers and women across eight counties in Southern California. Our units are proud to serve our community by providing security for citizens, conducting operations Supportive Maneuvering Units (SMU’s), providing training for local law enforcement officers and fire departments, serving as a support squadron for Air Force Reserve Command's Operation Desert Storm air campaign against Saddam Hussein's Iraq in 1991-92 and providing manpower for Homeland Security exercises since 1992.
