The Los Angeles County Coast Guard was first established on July 15, 1913. The original coast guard station in downtown L.A. was located on Third Street between Spring and Olive Streets. The first paid members of the Coast Guard were appointed by Governor of California William H. Jennings in 1915 and they began service under the command of Captain Frank Purdy who also served as Chief of Police at that time. In 1922, Harry S. Truman became President of the United States and ordered the end of World War 1 with a pledge to “make peace for all” which included ending hostilities between America’s countries allies and their respective militaries around the world including Japan where MacArthur had been given responsibility for pacifying the country following its war defeat in 1945.
