The Los Angeles National Guard was organized on September 14, 1920 as the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The first commander of the force was Lt. Col. John Hagerty with a staff of six officers and fifty-six enlisted men. On November 1, 1920, the organization became an regiment and elected Colonel James Fenton as its first commanding officer. In 1924, the regiment became part of California National Guard when it was organized into multiple brigades in response to President Warren G Harding's call for increased national security. The regiment remained inactive until 1965 when it was reactivated as a district guard unit in response to riots that had occurred throughout California that year. The district guards were disbanded in 1978 but their colors remain attached to the Los Angeles National Guard today as an honor squadron

Hughes, commander of the California National Guard. In 1916, the City of Los Angeles passed a resolution recognizing the need for a national guard force to protect citizens from "outside agitators." On July 1, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the National Defense Act which provided for an additional 3,000 soldiers to be drafted into service as part of the United States Army’s newly created General Staff. On November 15th 1922, President Warren G Harding signed into law The National Security Act which authorized the creation of an all-volunteer military force called “TheLosAngelesNationalGuard” with responsibility for providing security in both urban and rural areas across America. On December 12th 1924 Congress designated Los Angeles as one of six cities within its jurisdiction that would become part of what became known as “the National Military District” under authority of TheNationalSecurityActof1929. In 1935 Congress approved plans to form a second all-volunteer military district consisting of Southern California and adjacent Nevada Desert regions; however due to World War II funding limitations this plan never came to fruition. On August 29th 1942 Major General Leslie Riggs announced formation of Task Force Hollywood during a press conference at Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel; Task Force Hollywood consisted entirely of enlisted men from various parts Of Southern California including Pasadena (which was then part Of Los Angeles) and Long Beach (then part Of Orange County). task force Hollywood conducted numerous raids against Japanese camps located in Southern California between 1942 and 1945 inclusive such as Eagle Rock Campsite located near Pomona in March 1943; Ohlone Island off Ventura County in May 1944; Canoga Lake Campsite near Ontario on October 6th 1943; Twentynine Palms Harbor Site on January 8th 1945 were among many examples during WWII involving USCG personnel
