The Los Angeles Navy Museum has a significant history of naval deployments in the city. The museum’s first displays were military memorabilia from World War I and World War II. A few years later, the museum started displaying gifts from navy ships stationed in Southern California. One of the earliest gifts given to the Los Angeles Naval Museum was a ship’s bell from USS Constitution (1794) that was donated by Captain John Adams. Another gift was a trunk filled with Maritime artifacts from various navies that were stationed in Southern California during World War II. The USS Constitution's bell played an important role during the siege of Alcatraz Island and is still sounded today by LASD personnel as part of Fleet Week festivities in downtown LA. In 1966, the USS Enterprise (CVN 64) delivered two large crates of treasures looted from Rome's Colosseum including artworks, coins, medals and other relics worth an estimated $2 million USD to the museum. In 2001, Rear Admiral Harry Harris presented aUSS Enterprise helicopter basket with 16 trophies to commemorate his visit to Southern California aboard this vessel while on deployment with US Pacific Command during Operation Neptune Spear operation against Osama bin Laden terrorist network. In recent years, however, there has been increased concern over how the navy is using its resources – particularly its spending on weapons systems that are not necessary for maritime operations. This paper will look at some key naval deployments from history, to see how they might be viewed today. One of the first large navies organized by America was formed during the Revolution: The Continental Navy. This force consisted of about 60 warships spread over three colonies - Rhode Island (from Providence Island), Massachusetts (from Cambridge), and Connecticut (from Milford). This early navy was very different from later navies; it had no permanent dockyard or barracks, instead relying on fleets of ships to transport troops and supplies across oceans. Unlike later navies which would develop their own arsenals and industry to provide them with modern weaponry, these early warships were built primarily for military service. The Continental Navy was disbanded after only two years due to lack of funding; this is sometimes cited as one reason why America never mounted any successful attacks against England during the war. However, this disbanding also likely helped pave the way for America’s reliance on British arms throughout much of the conflict. During World War II, Pentagon planners envisioned that amphibious assaults could be used as decisive blows against enemy forces ashore – something that had never before been attempted on such massive scale outside Europe or Asia traditions.[1] plans called for up to 1 million Marines and sailors to land anywhere within sight of enemy territory in order to break through beachheads into German-held territory[2]. Although this ambitious plan ultimately failed spectacularly,[3] it does show how seriously American planners were regarding amphibious warfare at this time: it would soon become one of America’s most important capabilities abroad.
