The Los Angeles Naval Ship Repair and Maintenance District (LANSARD) was established in 1924 as the first naval shipyard on the West Coast of America. It specialized in repairing, maintaining, and operating Navy ships. The first ship repaired at LANSARD was the USS Constitution, which had been sunk by a Spanish vessel off Santa Catalina Island on July 9, 1805. LANSARD became an active repair site for Navy vessels from 1924-1946. In 1946, LANSARD merged with other naval yards to form the California Naval Shipyards Corporation (CNAS). As part of CNAS’s mission, it acquired responsibility for all navy ship repair activities on the west coast of North America. In 1957, NAS Whidbey Island became home to NAS Los Angeles when it joined CNAS. The City of Los Angeles Beautiful Historic Site contains more than 1,600 acres ofaddenings dating back to 1886 including over 100 buildings belonging to the USS Constitution Museum and Library complex as well as several other naval vessels which were used during World War II and after. The museum is open Monday through Friday 10am-4pm; Saturday 10am-3pm; closed Sundays; and closed holidays. Admission is free for visitors who are within walking distance of both terminals at Dodger Stadium or Staples Center located adjacent to downtown LAX International Airport
