The LAPD has a long and proud history of policing the city of Los Angeles. The department was founded on July 25, 1903 as the San Fernando Valley Police Department. It was renamed the LAPD on November 14, 1920 after it merged with other police departments in the City of Los Angeles. In 1942, during World War II, the LAPD became one of the first agencies in North America to deploy helicopters for law enforcement purposes. In 1957, then-Chief Charlie Beck unveiled a new police academy that would train future officers in how to work with technology. LAPD's current Chief Charlie Beck announced plans to retire at the end of his term on December 15th, 2020. He had served in that role since September 2014 when he succeeded Dan Gilroy. As Chief Beck stated during his retirement announcement: "My experience as LAPD’s longest serving Chief…means I have watched this organization change over time while also learning lessons that can be applied to other agencies."
