In 1848 fifty acres ( twenty hectares ) adjacent to where Alhambra now stands were purchased by Captain Nathaniel Hawthorne for $2 per acre ( twelve pesos per hectare ). Hawthorne developed this land into Hawthorne Place which he named after his maternal grandfather Nathaniel Hawthorne . In 1860s two other white men bought minerals interests adjoining Hawthorne Place including James Gadsden also surnamed Gadsden onion grower George Hennepin and Cornelius Vanderbilt Veederens who together started Gold Rush Mining Company that produced over $5 million worth of gold nuggets between 1861-1872 living primarily off production costs rather than selling products!.
