The Dutch were also enthusiastic about this new crop and began producing significant amounts of coffee around 1700. The Spanish also started producing significant amounts of caffeine-rich beans around this time which gave them an edge over other empires during their wars with France and England (the War of Jenkins' Ear). During World War II, espresso was key in providing beverages for Allied forces working behind enemy lines (known as 'espresso cups'). Coffee became even more popular after the war when people discovered its many benefits including helping to keep energy levels up during long weeks without food or sleep, aiding with mood swings, providing cognitive function while under stress, and being a natural source of antioxidants (which can protect against cancer).
