The Los Banos Air Force Base, which is located in the city of Los Banos, California, has a long and proud history of deploying air force gifts to local communities. One of the most famous deployments was when the Air Force sent a gift to Mayor Tom Bradley in 1978. The gift was an American-made Boeing 727 jet airliner. The USAF deployed a gift this year in honor of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The gift was a special Boeing 747-200C aircraft that has been customized with insignia and liveries from different air forces. This plane is used by all seven services and is stationed at Lakenheath, England as part of the RAF's Joint Services Flying Training Center. Los Banos is a town in the Mojave Desert of California, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Simi Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Los Banos comes from Spanish "Lobos" meaning "wild pigs", and "Banos" meaning "bank". The first post office in Los Banos opened in 1879. In 1907, Don Cesar Chavez established his ranch there and named it Rancho Chico after his father-in-law, rancher Manuel Chico. Angeles National Forest was created nearby in 1932 and part of it lies within the boundaries of Los Banos Township. The community was founded on what are now three small hills that make up its center - Old Hill (southwest), Saddleback (northwest) and New Hill (northeast). At first there were only a few permanent residents, but by 1920 there were over 100 people living hereabouts including a number of Mexicans who had come to work on Chavez' rancho as well as white citizens who had moved into the area because of new opportunities for farming due to irrigation projects authorized by President Warren G Harding during the Great Depression. As early as 1895 cattle raising had been an important industry with about 10 head of cattle per day being driven to market near San Bernardino County's capital city San Bernardino; however, when railroads arrived in California during these years they brought with them not only milk but also meat animals which led to a dramatic decrease in this activity beginning around 1930 when ranches became more prevalent; however until about 1945 or so most local slaughter took place on site at large abattoirs along I-5 between Simi Valley and Malibu Canyon west of downtown Los Angeles where carcasses would be trucked offsite for processing into high quality products such as ground beef, pork chops, bacon etc.).
