Since the early days of the Los Banos Air Force Base, there has been a close relationship between the Air Force and local businesses. The Air Force provides essential services to area residents, and local businesses provide essential support to Air Force members. The first store on base was built by the Army in 1944 as part of Project Mockingbird. The store was known as "The Geezer" because it was located near the entrance to the base. In 1951, Headquarters USAF established an air arm unit at Los Banos AFB, which became known as Squadrons A-1 and A-2. In 1957, Squadron A-3 was activated at Los Banos AFB and replaced Squadron A-1. In 1958, Headquarters USAF relocated from San Diego to Los Banos AFB and new headquarters building were constructed which served as headquarters for both squadrons until 1969 when they moved into their current buildings at 1000 N Main Street. In 1970, Headquarters USAF decommissioned Squadrons A-1 and A-2 at Los Banos AFB effective 1/1/1970 due to budget cuts. However they kept them around in Reserve status until 5/15/1977 when they were reactivated again with redesignation of Wing 3 (Air Combat Command) based out of RAF Lakenheath England with responsibility for all air operations within Southern California Areas 12 (the original 10). In 1978 units reassigned from other commands such as Fighter Command Kirtland AFB NY also arrived here including: 4th Tactical Fighter Wing (later 5th Tactical Fighter Wing), 15th Airlift Squadron (later 20th Airlift Squadron), 453d Strategic Missile Wing Vandenberg AFB CA among others causing a total population increase from 2200 civilian employees to 5000 military employees with an active duty force size of 10000 officers and enlisted personnel plus 6000 civilians in support roles totaling 2700 people making it one of largest AF bases in terms of enrollment today while still maintaining its unique atmosphere that is hard earned through years of dedicated service by its citizens

Los Banos, California was founded on July 8, 1848 by Mariano Castro and his brothers José and Francisco. The town started as a rancho on the east side of present-day Los Banos. In 1850, the name was changed to Banco de la California, which later became the United States Bank. The town was incorporated in 1881. Banco de la California merged with the Northern Pacific Railway in 1914 to form the Santa Fe Railway. The first post office in Los Banos opened in 1851. On February 14, 1861, Los Banos got its own city charter from Governor Manuel Micheltorena.
