Los Banos, California was founded in 1795 by Juan Bautista de Anza as the Rancho del Presidio. The town of Los Banos was founded in 1867 and incorporation occurred in 1871. The city of Los Banos was formed in 1912 and annexation occurred in 1915. The city is a part of the San Bernardino Valley metropolitan area. The history of Los Banos can be traced back to 1795 when Juan Bautista de Anza established the Rancho del Presidio, which he named after his father, Mission Santa Cruz de los Angeles. In 1827, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Torres discovered gold near present-day Los Banos and decided to establish an outpost there for the purposes of exploring this new land. After Comanche Chief Quanah Parker destroyed two Spanish missions at Loreto Creek in 1835, Mexican Governor Agustín Acevedo ordered Lopez to develop this region for Mexico's future growth. However, while prospecting for gold near present-day La Puente, Lopez ran into resistance from local Native American groups who claimed ownership of the area. With no other viable options available at that time, Lopez abandoned his plans for development and returned to Mexico City with his findings. In order to claim what he had found, Lopez hired César Pico to explore the area and report back on its prospects; however, Pico instead explored downriver to Tulane Lake (later known as Angelus Lake). This event helped spark Mexican interest in developing southcentral California; consequently, on October 12th, 1836 López de Torres set off from Loreto Creek with 400 men including 20 cavalrymen undercaptain José Joaquín Márquez y Gasset to explore Chihuahua County located east of Coahuila Territory then administered by Mexico under Emperor Francisco Javier vaqueros y Monterey as part of an expedition led by Captain Ignacio Arguello[1]. On November 4th they reached San Diego Pass where they camped for three days before continuing their journey northeastward along today's I-5 corridor until they reached Paso Robles on January 6th next year[2]. Lopez continued northward along what is now I-15 until he came across a small mountain range called Barranca Blanca or White Mountain; upon reaching this landmark he ordered all men remaining behind while he ascended it without any supplies or equipment expecting only hardship due to its altitude but ended up finding abundant mineral wealth estimated at $20 million dollars per acre[3]. He soon thereafter began issuing patents throughout southern California covering an area that included much of today's Riverside County[4]. Although most historians agree that López did not achieve true success with his discoveries because few if any mines were developed,[5][6] his name still remains associated with these regions due largely to him being one of the first Europeans everTo visit these regions during those early 1800s years! Some believe that Lopez may have been able to find what later became known as Gold Country because evidence suggests that many natives were already aware of large quantities of gold hidden within these mountains!
