Los Banos is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 29,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area. The first European to arrive in what is now Los Banos was Spanish conquistador Manuel Nieto on July 24, 1769. He named the site "Chihuahua" after his home province of Chihuahua, Mexico. Mexican land grants were made to Juan Bautista de Anza and others who explored this region in 1821 and 1824 respectively. In 1842, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded by Franciscan missionaries with assistance from Spain as part of their attempts to proselytize among the local Native American groups in what is now Southern California and adjacent Nevada. In 1861, parts of southern San Bernardino County (which included present-day Los Banos) became part of Riverside County when it was created from portions of San Bernardino and Ventura counties along the Colorado River line. The railroad reached Los Banos on November 3, 1912 when it connected nearbywatchers stations at Simi Valley with Needles through 12 miles (19 km) of track extending northwest from downtown Riverside. The town's growth during World War I began with soldiers stationed there for military service who built barracks and stores around what would become its central square before returning home for Christmas or other festivities each year; in 1919 they erected a large observation post overlooking City Hall Square which still stands today that served as a symbol of civic engagement during wartime efforts to keep troops stationed near major population centers while they were away from their families. During World War II three airfields were built within five miles (8 km) of town: Alhambra Army Airfield #1 just east of town on Cahuenga Boulevard; Gillespie Field #2 just south-southwestof town on University Avenue; and Glenn Halsey Field #3 about two miles northeastof town on Elm Street). After the war key figures such as Mayor Harry Daugherty turned their attention towards redevelopment including bringing trucking companies into town starting in 1951 followed by agriculture until becoming an industrial center again following enactment of Proposition 65 which banned most chemical use in 1986 led to dramatic drops in production over ensuing years culminating eventually with closure of all but one plant early last decade attributed largely to climate change impacts
