Los Banos, California is a small town in the Mojave Desert located about an hour east of Las Vegas. The population was 9,701 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Clark County, Nevada metropolitan area. The economy primarily revolves around farming and ranching with some light commercial activity. The first Europeans to enter Los Banos were Mormon pioneers who arrived in 1847 from Utah. They founded a small Mexican village near present-day Las Vegas as part of their religious journey westward. From here, missionaries traveled to various parts of Mexico before arriving in Los Banos in 1857 for trade goods with the local Indian people that ranchers and farmers had been trading with for years. Mesa found abandoned towns including "Las Brisas," which he named Banos after one of his discoveries; but no evidence has ever surfaced substantiating this claim that Los Banos was actually founded by him or any other Mexican leader during this time frame. The town was platted in 1892 by John Sutter and James Irvine with land bought from Señor Robert Hinkle of San Francisco for $5 per acre. A post office was established at Los Banos on November 16, 1893, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on March 15, 1955. The name "Los Banos" originates from an ancient Ohlone Indian word meaning "place where cattle are pastured." In 1919, Harry Chandler opened his own grocery store which became popular among the locals because they could purchase fresh produce without leaving their homes. Chandler's Store remains a prominent fixture in local history today and still sells groceries online or through phone orders over the counter from its original location in downtown Los Banos. In 1951 General Motors opened a plant here that produced Corvair cars; production continued until 1979 when it moved to Pico Rivera near Carson City Nevada due to a lack of space at GM's old facility there. In recent years, much attention has been given to efforts being made to revive downtown LosBanos which had fallen into disrepair following its closure by General Motors nearly thirty years ago.
