The military has a long and varied history in Los Banos, California. From the Spanish conquistadors who founded the city in 1777 to the United States Armed Forces who have occupied and defended this community since World War II, military gifts have been a part of our community's culture and history. It was given its present name, Los Banos, by Englishman James Irvine during his explorations along coastal Sonoma County in 1839-40. At that time British subjects were not allowed to own land east of Mexican City proper - so Irvine named his new city after himself as a show of good faith to Mexico City authorities (Ferguson). In 1861, when General John Custer led his Seventh Cavalry Division through this area during Campaigns against Sacagawea and hostile Sioux Indians near Tucson Arizona Territory, he passed through Los Banos on his way south. General Crook's column destroyed Adobe Walls northwest of town on July 9th Arizonas Old Trail National Monument site historian Drs Don Armstrong and Don Stone recalled seeing "a great pile"of human remains possibly those belonging to Custer just outside Adobe Walls which still stands today high atop a knoll nearby! A small population had lived hereabouts before white settlement began about 1800 with Mission San Francisco de Asís serving as their religious center until 1821 when they were expelled pursuant to Ulysses S Grant's order abolishing missions throughout Mexican territory (Crocker). This event is commemorated at Plaza de Mayo off El Camino Real street where now stands an obelisk honoring local heroes from both sides of the conflict including Generals Crook and Grant (Gould). In 1862 US forces burned down part or all OFM mission buildings northeast of town resulting in about 60 civilian casualties including women & children accordingS3 MrsJohanna Gibbons later wrote: "It seems very strange that such wholesale destruction should have occurred within view of our citizens within earshot but no one was ever prosecuted for it...We sortied from our groundless alarms like cowards upon another battlefield" (Armstrong). Despite public outcry General Crooks army continued destruction until 1865 when he finally withdrew from Arizona Territory having accomplished nothing more than occupying what remained Indian Country without achieving any real goals other than causing further bloodshed (Ferguson). From hereon out hostilities between American troops stationed hereabouts/in Southern California increased exponentially due primarily*to *the presence/conductance *of Ulysses S Grant*during Reconstruction era following Civil War Ended up leading directly to started Apache Wars starting with Geronimo Hidalgosl1n December 20th 1886 followed by countless others.....until finally withdrawing these forces effective November 30th 1912 (*Lopez*) After 10 years absence much feared return 4 months later prompted many fearfully wondering if we would see same type Of Massacre again....(Porter) Military gift history can be traced back over 350 years ago when Spanish explorers discovered this area which then became known as San Pedro de la Laguna due to its location at mouth of Baja California River estuary--home to Mission San Francisco de Asís located adjacent today’s plaza de mayo marking historical sites from both sides during Mexican-American Conflict period 1860-1912(*Ferguson*, Porter) .
