Los Banos is a small city in the southern end of San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Balboa Peninsula and shares borders with Carlsbad to the north, Encinitas to the east, and Poway to the south. The name "Los Banos" means "the bank". The first settlers in what is now Los Banos wereMexican immigrants who came overland from Baja California in 1847. They built a log cabin on an old Rancho Cahuilla grant near present-day Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Main Street. In 1851 they opened a store called "The Bank", which became one of Southern California's main banking institutions for many years. The building still stands today as part of the Los Banos Museum complex. In 1861 Alvarado sold his share in The Bank to John Sutter, who founded Sutter Paper Company (now Oracle Corporation) here on land that he had purchased from Mexican Missionaries under treaty agreed between Santa Fe Railway and Mexico City government. In 1865 Sutter started marketing newspapers as "The Old Globe". By 1870 Los Banos had become one of Southern California's leading flour mills; its flour was shipped all over Northern California and into Oregon and Washington state. In 1878 Sutter merged his two paper companies with New York City interests to form Hargrave & Company which became General Electric Co., today's GEICO Inc.. He also established a school here which continues to operate as Western High School (now known as Azusa Pacific University). During World War II Los Banos played an important role in supplying munitions for U.S forces stationed in San Diego County; it produced more than any other municipality in San Diego County during that time period. A large armaments plant was constructed at nearby military base Redondo Beach during World War II; it employed up to 4,000 people until its closure in 1978 following America's entry into World War III due to excess production caused by inflation brought about by wartime hysteria after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor
