The Los Banos Naval Air Station (LBNAS) was established on December 1, 1942 by the United States Navy. The station was located at an existing airfield in the town of Banos, California. It rapidly became one of the most important naval airfields in the Pacific theater and played a major role in World War II. In 1946, LBNAS became part of Naval Air Station Fallon which also included NAS El Centro and NAS Point Mugu. In 1957, LBNAS was redesignated as Naval Air Station Long Beach and changed its name to Naval Air Station Torrance. On May 15, 1959, NAS Long Beach reverted back to its original name - Los Banos Naval Air Station - when it became a naval base under the command of Commander-in-Chief Western Pacific Fleet. Over time, LBNAS has become increasingly famous for its aircraft carrier operations and support activities such as providing aerial refueling for fighter jets during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Just Cause in 1990. As well, it has been used for various training exercises such as Range Training exercise with Marine Corps Aviation unit Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 133 (VMFA-133) in 1995 and Joint Terminal Attack School (JTASC) classes with Marine Aircraft Group 38 (MAG-38) from 1995 until 1998. Today LBNAS is home to several squadrons of Helicopter Units including: CVG-3 aboard USS George Washington; AH-1Z Sea Knight helicopters based at NAS Lemoore; MH-60R Seahawk helicopters based at Republic Airport CA; EA-6B Prowler helicopter squadron VF(N) 106 commanded by Commodore Rickover AFB HI; CVW(A)-5C Corsair II squadron VCAG 5 commanded by Captain John Sutherlin Jr., Carrier Strike Group 11 led by Captain David Aikenham – all operated out of NAS Long Beach or Torrance! On October 1st 2000 Prince William and Catherine made their historic visit to USS Enterprise (CVN 74), Carrier Strike Group 11 while en route from Yokohama Japan to Okinawa Japan via Singapore SEA after completing a transpacific deployment on USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76). They were welcomed by Admiral Harry Harris who served as Commander Western Pacific Fleet during their visit aboard Enterprise/VCAG 5 including flying into Japanese airspace on HNLMS Rotterdam prior to their arrival! This event marks the first time that a reigning monarch had ever visited an American military installation outside of North America!

Los Banos is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Kern River. The town was founded in 1858 by George A. Smith and his brother-in-law John Sutter, both of whom were gold prospectors.
