Los Banos is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. It was incorporated on November 15, 1849. The population was 1,714 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Spanish "Banus" meaning "northern bay". The first policeman in Los Banos was Policeman Francisco Lopez who served from 1851 to 1854. He was followed by Captain James Ennis who served from 1855 to 1861. Then Captain Lorenzo Reyes served from 1861 to 1865 and finally Sergeant Manuel Gomez who served from 1865 to 1870. Captain John Wetherington arrived in Los Banos on July 6, 1870 and he became the first police officer of Los Banos police department. He Serve until his death on October 20, 1870. After Captain John Wetherington's death, Lieutenant George Burgess took over as captain and continued serving until his retirement on December 12, 1896. Lieutenant George Burgess' successor was Sergeant Abel Ramos who served until 1898 when he resigned due to illness. On January 1, 1899 Deputy Sheriff Roscoe Humes came into town and began serving as the new police officer of Los Banos Police Department with temporary power until someone could be appointed permanently with full powers by the county board of supervisors On February 2nd Deputy Sheriff Humes retired after 21 years service with the department Assistant Sheriff Harry Jinks replaced him effective March 9th Trinidad Vargas took over as ActingSheriff for 3 days on March 10th before Vargas resigned because he had lost office equipment . On May 7th First Class Constable Willis Brown became permanent replacement for Assistant Sheriff Harry Jinks when Jinks left for personal reasons On October 4th First Class Constable Willis Brown resigned effective November 5th because of ill health . From then on it was Inspector Edward Cockerill who acted as the permanent policing officer until 1931 when Lieutenant Charles Denny assumed command Thereafter Inspector Edward Cockerill continued acting as law enforcement officer up through 1951 When Superintendent Clyde Tingley took command in 1951 ,he ordered all officers begin wearing uniforms instead of hats while they awaited orders from higher authorities concerning their attire

The community was founded in 1892 by Johnnie Moore and his wife Fannie Smith; it received its name from Banning's Ranch on Banning Creek. In addition to its namesake institution - which has been designated a California Historical Landmark - Los Banos also contains several other notable landmarks: Banning Dam – This dam impounds the San Joaquin River and forms part of the town’s water supply system. The dam was built by Paul Parkman in 1923 for irrigation purposes and is now owned by Southern California Edison Company subsidiary SCEI Water Division (Los Angeles). Baker Canyon – A narrow canyon located east of town that offers breathtaking views of Mt Whitney National Park downstream from downtown Los Banos . The canyon was formed when two rivers converged about 100 feet below ground level during heavy rainfallstorms in 1879-80. Mt Whitney Avenue – A long street running east-west through Downtown Los Banos that features many restaurants including Pizzeria Vicente’s Italian restaurant which has been operational since 1924 and has been featured on numerous TV shows including “Chef’s Table” starring Mario Batali and Thomas Keller . Los Banos was founded in 1871 by Francisco Isidro Lopez and his wife, Marcela. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of gold in nearby hills and mines. The firstCourtesy store opened in 1872. In 1886, Los Banos became an incorporated town with a mayor and a council. By 1912, it had a population of over 10,000 people.
