The Los Gatos Air Force Base is a vital part of the California Defense Department. It has been home to the United States Air Force for over 40 years, and its mission is to protect California from enemy attack. The base provides a safe haven for military aircraft and people, as well as essential air support for state defense initiatives. On July 15th, 1941, during World War II, Los Gatos AFB was one of the first American bases in the war on message traffic between America and Japan. In 1946-1947, it was also one of two American airports in southern California that were used by Communist China in their propaganda campaign against the United States. Today, Los Gatos AFB restates itself as one of the most important strategic USAF installations in Northern California – housing more than 50 different combat wings and squadrons along with thousands of civilian employees who maintain military facilities across Southern Californian communities. The Los Gatos Air Force Base gift history goes back to the early days of the base. The first gift given to the Air Force by a civilian was a rifle, which was given to Major General George Armstrong Custer in 1881. In 1923, the Air Corps gifts two pistols as part of its Christmas present to the military. In 1951, Sergeant First Class Walter Ewing gave a set of equipment for the air force's new school at El Toro. That same year, Airman First Class John Fenton gave an airplane and parts to AFB. On December 1st 1957, Colonel Arthur Waddington presented an American-made jet fighter aircraft and engine to USAF Headquarters in Washington D.C..

The city was founded in 1851 as part of Rancho El Cuchillo Mexican Land grant. Los Gatos became an incorporated town on November 3, 1907. The name "Los Gatos" means "The Place Where Wolves Hunt."

It was originally called the Army Air Forces and it was first stationed in Ninth Air Force at Offutt AFB, Nebraska. The USAF moved to Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio in 1948 and became an independent service with its own headquarters. In 1951, the USAF discontinued its role as a peacetime branch of the military and placed all its resources into aerospace warfare. On July 1, 1958, the USAF merger with other military branches led to creation of the Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD absorbed all predecessor services within their respective organizational structures. Since its inception, air force gifts have been a important part of DoD culture and tradition. Throughout its history, air force gifts have represented many different aspects of service to DoD including funds for research and development projects; awards for heroism; donations for disaster relief; retired officer appreciation ceremonies; education programs; and more. Some of the most famousair force gift recipients include Douglas MacArthur, General Curtis LeMay, Admiral Mike Mullen, General George Custer and Vice President Lyndon B Johnson. Each recipient has left their mark on American aviation both during their time as recipients and after they were passed away.

Los Gatos, California is a small town in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 5,823 at the 2000 census. It is situated on the San Francisco Peninsula, just north of San Jose and east of Palo Alto. Los Gatos has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years and was founded in 1851 as an agricultural center on the present-day site of Redwood City. In 1868 it became an incorporated settlement and began to grow as a bedroom community for San Francisco. The town reached its peak population in the 1920s with an estimated population of 25,000; however, during World War II Los Gatos' economy shifted focus to defense production and military housing. After the war it declined rapidly until its recent rebound in the late 1990s as a result of new development including technology companies such as Google and Apple Incorporated The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Los Gatos County in 1851 when Captain John Crespi and his men from Rancho San Lorenzo landed unannounced onshore nearpresent-day Redwood City while seeking passage to Alta California. By 1853 two more vessels had arrived with even more people: USS Beecher (1853) and USS Vandalia (1854). The first store opened within three weeks of arrival along with sawmills, tanneries and a school house which served rudimentary education for non-natives until 1861 when Pueblo de los Arcos Consolidated School District No. 2 opened kindergarten through eighth grade students on land donated by traders James Purdy III., George Hearst Sr., Alcalde Don Tomas Menocal y Mariano Moreno. A millrace running south from downtown led directly to Mill Valley Reservoir where local mills operated catchment systems that supplied irrigation water for agriculture off village square until 1906 when Hanford Dam impounded all necessary hydrology making Mill Valley accessible only for draining storm sewers fed by groundwater seepage from nearby hillsides - hence begins residential development near reservoirs rather than viaVillage Square In 1865 Jedediah Smith set out from Nome Alaska across Siberia on foot unsupported Via Russian Mail Expedition 12 miles beyond Ural River into American continent but failed due to illness en route some 40 days after leaving Nome Western Canada & ended upfourteen mile below Muskeg River near present day North Pole he named "Ender's Land" after party leader/guide Hidetaka Yoneda who accompanied him
Los Gatos, California was founded in 1847 by Jedediah Smith and his men as the first permanent settlement on the San Francisco Peninsula. The town was named for José Gomez, a captain in the Mexican army who helped establish Spanish Fort at Point Richmond. The town grew rapidly during its early years, and by 1850 had a population of over 100 people. In 1852, Los Gatos became an agricultural center with a large dry goods store and other businesses. It also became known for its wines and beer. In 1865, Los Gatos joined with Santa Clara to form the new city of San Francisco. By 1870, Los Gatos had reached its peak as a commercial center and industrial area. However, during the late 1800s it began to decline as manufacturing moved away from California into other parts of America. In 1923, Los Gatos merged with neighboring Sunnyvale to become one of the largest cities in Silicon Valley.
