The Los Gatos Volunteers Militia was formed on October 7, 1879 in response to the US Civil War. The Santa Clara County militia had been called up for duty in 1859 but disbanded because of financial reasons. In 1861, the San Francisco Bay Battalion was raised and served in the California Rebellion. On December 15, 1862, the first battalion of Los Gatos Volunteers was organized and served at Monterey Peninsula Campaign under Major General John C. Fremont. In 1865, a second battalion of Los Gatos Volunteers was organized and served as part of Yosemite Expedition commanded by Brigadier General Robert Halleck. In 1868-69 a third battalion of Los Gatos Volunteers service was with Black Hawk War (1868-1870) led by Colonel Augustus Folsom within 1st Cavalry Regiment under command colonel James Wylie Johnston. In 1870-71 a fourth battalion of Los Gatos Volunteers service during Mexican–American War (1846-1847). In 1872 volunteer company fromLos Gatos formed first Volunteer Infantry regiment American Volunteer Legion which fought against Seminole Wars (1875) and in Spanish American War (1910). On July 5th 1907 an act passed by California state legislature entitled "An Act prescribing regulations for the organization and arming of volunteers" authorized formation of military department within state government known as " Californian Guard ". This new armory & depot were located at 223 Church Street in downtown Los Gatos across from City Hall building until 1919 when it moved to Depot Square adjacent to County Courthouse where it remains to this day
