In the early 1900s, Los Gatos was a small agricultural town in the Santa Clara Valley. It was home to approximately 10,000 people and the military played an important role in their life. The first hint of this comes from Captain John Fetterman who served with distinction as a cavalry officer during the Mexican-American War. He donated land to create Camp Fetterman, which became an Army post in 1898. The townspeople were so grateful that they named their Post Office after him. From then on, service members could stop by and pick up some supplies or just buy something new on sale at Ft. Bates’ General Store. The military also bought property in Los Gatos for training purposes starting in 1915. This area became known as “Forty Acres Forests” and later “Camp Gettysburg” for its primary use – training infantrymen for World War I. In 1919, Fortify Los Gatos was completed and began serving as an artillery range for Army guns stationed near San Jose Airport. In 1935, Fortify Los Gatos became part of Camp Pendleton and continues to serve today as one of the largest Marine Corps bases in Southern California! The late 1800s saw a shift towards air power during World War II whenLos Gatos residents started developing airstrips along Highway 1016 to support aerial bombardment activities throughout Northern California (later Southern California). In 1939, Angeles National Forest was purchased by the US Military and shortly afterwards developed into what is now Angeles National Park! The name "Los Gatos" comes from Spanish meaning "the place where trees grow". The area that includes present-day Los Gatos was first populated by Native Americans and then American Mexicans who arrived during the Mexican-American War in 1848. This region served as a battleground between both sides and saw heavy fighting including one of the bloodiest battles in California history when more than 1,500 people were killed on October 16th and 17th of that year at Mount Avila near what is now downtown Los Angeles. In 1861, Jepson founded the town of Los Gatos on land he donated to the community for economic development.Jepson's donation became part of an effort to split up Santa Clara County into small towns so that each could be developed without competition from other communities in San Francisco Bay Area. In 1872, the City Council authorized building of a water tower which would become central to municipal operations; it is still standing today (now known as Municipal House). One year later, dynamite destroyed much of downtown Los Gatos with an estimated $5 million loss to businesses and homes. It wasn't until 1906 when fire destroyed most commercial buildings in downtown LA that Downtown Los Gatos truly began its renaissance as a business center after years of decline following devastating fires elsewhere in town such as Almaden Creek Mills & Willow Glen Shopping Center Today there are several districts within Downtown LA – South Central District (formerly part of Chinatown), West Village/Newport Beach District (formerly part of Venice), Midtown/Zona Rosa District (former portions of Boyle Heights & Echo Park), Koreatown/ Lincoln Heights/ Miracle Mile Complexes – which all have their own unique cultures and flavors that make them distinct from any other district withinLA One reason why Downtown LA has continued to thrive despite difficult times is because it is anchored by two major employers: KPMG LLP and Sony Pictures Entertainment Incorporated – two companies with massive footprints inside and outsideLA The South Central District has been particularly hard hit by gentrification recently with many high-end restaurants having closed or moved out while prices for apartments have increased dramatically making it difficult for low-income residents to pay rent even if they can find space However there are efforts underway by some residents to revive this district including creating art galleries, music venues etc., which should help stabilize prices and provide affordable living options
Los Gatos was founded on November 5, 1879 by Elias Howe and family. The town was named for the Los Gatos Hills, which are located in northern Santa Cruz County. The founder's father had come to the area from New York City in 1847.
