The Coast Guard in Los Gatos, California has been providing law enforcement and public safety services for the community since 1892. In 1916, the first coast guard station was established onshore in Los Gatos. The Coast Guard today provides coastal security, search and rescue, maritime patrol, fisheries protection and environmental cleanup services. In 1915, the first coast guard station was established onshore in Los Gatos with a single engine boat to help protect the local fishing industry. The Station operated out of an old munitions plant until 1936 when an acquired vessel became available to house a galley kitchenette and four officers. In 1941, a new pier was built at Monterey Bay to accommodate larger vessels and additional officers were hired to provide security for items arriving from overseas. In 1951, another purchased vessel became available to house a galley kitchenette and twelve officers while personnel were increased by twenty two officers in 1957 when an annex was added to the pier that served as Headquarters Annex for both the Civilian Commandant (CGC) Office located ashore and also Offices of Patrol Marine (OPM) which handled Search And Rescue (SAR) missions off shore from Point Reyes National Seashore. A year later in 1958 a new terminal building was constructed at Point Reyes which allowed for simultaneous loading/unloading of large commercial vessels using three ramps instead of one narrow ramp used during earlier years. In 1977-1978 an annex was added to Pier 21 which housed barracks for both Marines stationed ashore as well as civilians who worked alongside military personnel operating aboard ships chartered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. This annexation also provided additional berthing space for up to seventy five boats moored offshore during high tide making it possible for crewsTo disembark/board vessels under tow or directly from barges or other landing craft while underway without having them come within swimming distance of shoreline dwellings or beacheside areas where people would be likely To approach To view & photograph Vessels Underway In 1984-1985 two more purchasing vessels became available with each providing accommodation for thirtyfour officers aboard eleven GALLEY CONTAINERS .
