Los Gatos is a small town in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 6,044 at the 2010 census. It is part of Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit Los Gatos were the Spanish in 1821. They named it Santiago de los Gatos because of their fear that an animal would attack them on their way from Mexico City to Monterey Bay. The first permanent settler in Los Gatos was James Waddell who arrived in 1838 and built his home on Rancho Rinconada near present-day downtown Los Gatos. In 1850, George Hearst founded what is now Hearst Castle here. A few years later, businessman Hiram Maxim moved to Los Gatos from San Francisco and opened a clothing store here in 1857 which became one of the city's earliest businesses. In 1860, local resident David Cuningham started publishing the local paper, "The Californian". The early years of this century were difficult for the town as three major fires destroyed most of its homes and businesses - one during 1906 earthquake; another during 1938–39 when a severe drought caused widespread damage; and another during 1945 when Japan bombed Los Angeles during World War II (the bombing killed many people). By 1950, however, things had stabilized with new housing being developed around downtown as well as burgeoning business activity associated with computer technology development beginning at nearby Stanford University. During the late 1940s through 1960s there was heavy military spending by both America and Great Britain at nearby Menlo Park adjacent to Los Gatos Creek (now Palo Alto) due east of town along Highway 101 (later Interstate 280) - this led to proliferation of palm trees along I-280 highway median strip leading up into Menlo Park where soldiers could rest after completing their tours of duty or checking out some new technology invented by American scientists stationed at Stanford University while Menlo Park sat largely unguarded! One result was increased traffic congestion around downtown areas including Race Street/Foothill Boulevard corridor where all residential development stopped abruptly about 1965 until much recent redevelopment took place; this once again impacted negatively upon quality of life for locals living northward along I-280 corridor leading past Downtown Menlo Park including highly popular neighborhoods such as Westlake Village/Oakland Hills located immediately southwest thereof – these neighborhoods continue today to experiencenamely significant crime rates relative thereto notwithstanding recent police efforts targeting these areas’ pervasive drug trafficking activities!).
