Los Gatos is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California. The population was 9,826 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Santa Clara River. Los Gatos has been known as "The City of Oaks" since its establishment in 1887 and was once one of the largest and most prosperous cities in California. However, it has slipped behind Irvine and San Diego in terms of economic development and population growth over recent years. Today, Los Gatos is a sleepy community with limited amenities, but its location near Silicon Valley makes it an attractive place to work or live. Los Gatos began as a small settlement on March 20, 1887 by three men who founded what would become Los Gatos Rancho de las Aguas del Norte (present-day Los Gatos). The town name comes from José Gomez's rancho los gatos (the cats), which were located just east of present-day downtown Los Gatos on what is now State Route 8A. From 1889 through 1901, Gelfand & Sons ran a post office and bakery in downtown Los Gatos; they also built two stores on First Street between Main and Oak Streets. In 1903, when Southern Pacific Railroad tracks were extended into the area, there was enough business activity to warrant the construction of a railroad station at Second Street between Main Avenue and Oak Street – this station served as both local transportation hub for goods moving through downtown Los GatOS until Amtrak took over passenger service in 1964. In 1926–27 Mayor George Waddell developed plans for redevelopment of downtown Los Angeles following approval from then-Governor James Buchanan; during his tenure as mayor, LOS GATOS became one of several areas within the city that experienced significant growth including West Hollywood (then called simply Hollywood), Echo Park (), North Hollywood (), Playa Vista () and South Pasadena (). In 1934–35 Mayor Elmer Levy approved funding for an express bus line which connected downtown LA with nearby neighborhoods such as Echo Park Lake (), Bel Air () and Toluca Heights (); this line was eventually dismantled due to financial problems but left evidence of itsexistence throughout Downtown LA today thanks to underground wires running beneath First Street between Main Avenue and Oak Street
