Lynwood is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 44,907 at the 2010 census. Lynwood is north of the City of Ventura and east of Oxnard. The first Europeans to visit Lynwood were the Spanish in 1821 during their expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà. A mission called San Gabriel was established in 1823 and served as the eastern terminus for Mission Santa Catalina (founded 1797). In 1849, Mexican territory east of Baja California was annexed into the United States; this area became Lynwood. The post office at Lynwood opened on February 14, 1850. A rail depot was built at Lynwood in 1852 and named "Arroyo Seco" after an Arroyo near Los Angeles that had been given to José Joaquin Moraes y Valdés as part of Rancho Rinconada grant dated December 8, 1846. The depot failed to take off and was abandoned in 1860 when Northern Pacific Railroad arrived through Ventura County. In 1865 David Sargent donated land comprising present-day downtown Lynwood to build what would become Sargent Park which now includes much of downtown with its original streetcar lines running along Prospect Avenue between First Street (now Main Street) and Second Street (now Stockton Boulevard). It took until 1880 before electric streetcars reached downtown; this change helped achieve a high level of public transportation usage throughout most of Ventura County by then including single-car systems within neighborhoods rather than relying on carts or buses only within central business districts like those found today in most major U.S cities with parallel bus/rail service options deep inside their core areas where people can walk or bike from one end to another insteadof needing a car or train ride
