The first Coast Guard Station in Lynwood was established on September 20, 1918 by the United States Army under the command of General John J. Pershing. The station was located at Moody Point on the Santa Monica Peninsula and served as a customs checkpoint for goods coming into and out of Los Angeles County. In 1941, the Coast Guard Station moved from Moody Point to its current location at Third Street and Harbor Boulevard on the eastern edge of Lynwood. In 1951, the station was renamed after Admiral Chester Nimitz, who had been Commander-in-Chief of Naval Forces Pacific during World War II. The present day Coast Guard Station is one of six USCG stations located along California's coastline. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009 (Public Law 111-383) amended Title 10 United States Code section 923 which provides for ``the training and arming of coastal security forces.''. As part of this amendment, money has been set aside in both fiscal years 2008 and 2009 to provide necessary equipment and training enhancements for state & local coast guard personnel within USCG jurisdiction. This appropriation will also fund certain operations that were previously funded through appropriations Acts prior to this amendment including maritime law enforcement activities off Southern California's coastline including stop&search searches as well as anti smuggling operations using unmanned surface vehicles As part of this funding enhancement program, new gear has been ordered by USCG Headquarters with an eye towards making life easier for state/local coast guardsmen when it comes to patrolling America's coasts patrol area; specifically areas near beaches and bays where drug trafficking activity may take place or where smugglers attempt to transportation large items such as drugs or explosives onto our shores
