Lynwood is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 38,611 at the 2010 census. Lynwood is located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County and is part of the greater South Bay Area metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lynwood were Spanish traders in 1827. The name "Los Angeles" was given to the whole region by Captain John Blythe during his 1799 survey of Southern California. A town named Los Angeles was founded in 1857 by Nathan Hale and other pioneers who arrived from Boston after the Mexican War. The name "Lynwood" was chosen by Captains Robert Haines and Nathaniel Lyon as a more American-sounding name for their new settlement which they established on land that had been donated by Jens Jensen (brother of wealthy speculator William Dudley Webb). In 1907, Lynwood's community hall became known as "The Forum" after then-mayor Angelo Rossi convened a forum series of public hearings to discuss zoning changes for the city center district proposed by developer Harry Bennett. At one hearing, Bennett asked local citizens if they wanted an open-air arena or an enclosed stadium for their baseball team; 80% said yes. In 1916, Harmon Killebrew became mayor when Lt.-Gov David Crenshaw resigned due to illness; Killebrew soon renamed Lynwood its own municipal government with its own police department and fire station. In 1984, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced plans to build a $165 million shopping mall called Regency Center in downtown Lynwood which would have anchored two freeways near Interstate 5 south of town (I-5 would have been moved 3 miles away). After much opposition from residents who felt that their neighborhoods would be destroyed or changed without their input, Sanders ultimately abandoned his plan and instead developed just one retail store - Sears - within Regency Center's boundaries
