Lynwood is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 78,539 at the 2010 census. Lynwood is situated on the eastern edge of Downtown Los Angeles and is bordered by North Hollywood to the north, Westchester County to the east, and Crenshaw County to the south. It has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cold winters. The city's nickname "The City of Angels" came from its location in what was then rural Kern County - now part of LA. The area that became Lynwood was first settled by Mexicans who worked in citrus groves near Green Valley along present-day Lankershim Boulevard. The post office opened in 1887, and named for General James Hancelyn Caldwell, who had commanded American forces during the Mexican War (1846-48). In 1907, businessman Harry Chandler purchased 5 acres near present-day Lankershim Boulevard and built his first home there – one of only a few houses ever constructed in Lynwood at that time. By 1915, Chandler had developed an agricultural industry with crops such as corn, vegetables, beans and eggs; this led to growth when he founded Hollywood Pictures Corporation in 1926. That year also saw the opening of Howard Hughes' Fox studios adjacent to Chandler's business park – which would later become Paramount Pictures Studios. In 1957–58, as part of efforts to redevelop downtown Los Angeles following urban renewal initiatives spearheaded by Mayor George Moscone (D), Lynwood began aggressive annexation intoLA making it one of several cities annexed into LA over that period. This process included purchasing properties around Lankershim Boulevard from developers who refused annexation or agreed to sell at low prices; these purchases helped makeLynwood one of LA's most affordable cities even before it became incorporated as a city

For many years, Lynwood has been a small agricultural community with limited industrial activities.
Lynwood was founded in 1887 by Gold Rush entrepreneurs John and Hiram Lynwood. The town of Lynwood grew rapidly after it was platted in 1887, with the first stores opening in 1890. A post office and a school were both established in 1893, but it wasn't until 1896 that the first telephone line was installed in the town. By 1914, Lynwood had a population of over 1,500 residents. In 1916, lynching occurred in the town; twelve men were killed and fifty-six others were injured as a result. In 1932, Los Angeles County became one of eleven counties within California; Lynwood's incorporation into Los Angeles County meant that its own government could be set up more effectively to deal with local issues. However, by 1941, Lynwood's economy had started to decline due to World War II shortages of munitions and other goods which caused prices for items such as gasoline to increase dramatically. The town experienced another era of economic prosperity during the 1960s through 1970s when its rate of growth exceeded 10%. But then again during the 1990s-2000s Lynwood saw significant declines in its economy due to new development projects and moves from single family homes to multi-family dwellings
