Lynwood is a small town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 17,878 at the 2010 census. Lynwood is located on the eastern edge of the city of Los Angeles and straddles both sides of Harbor Blvd., which divides it from Pasadena to the east and Beverly Hills to the west. Lynwood's foundation date back to 1907 when four businessmen pooled their money to purchase 640 acres (240 hectares) of land north of what is now downtown Los Angeles for $10 per acre. The town's name comes from an early inhabitant, John Alyn Woolley, who named his ranch "Lynwood" after a forest near his home in Hampshire, England.
Lynwood was founded in 1887 by David Starr Jordan and his wife, Emma. The town was named for the Monterey Hills beyond which it sat. After the war ended, Lynwood experienced rapid growth with its incorporation as a city in 1951. Its population reached over 10,000 by 1960 and peaked at 17,000 in 1980 before slowly declining over subsequent decades due to suburbanization and other economic factors. Lynwood is now primarily a bedroom community located within Los Angeles County; its only commercial sector is centered around its two main shopping centers: The Forum Shopping Center off Interstate 5 near Century City mall and Northridge Village Shopping Center off I-5 near Lennox High School
