Lynwood is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the edge of the Kern River Valley and bordered by Bakersfield to the south, Tulare County to the east, and Porterville to the north. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Kern County were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1769. A Rancho San Joaquin was granted by Governor Manuel Nieto to José Maria Caderey on November 2, 1824. Caderey named it La Colonia de las Animas (The Colony of Animals). When Mexican independence was declared in 1848, all land east of US-1 became part of Mexico while all land west of US-1 became part of California. The name change applied only to Rancho San Joaquin; other ranches within Kern County continued under their original names until they were sold off in 1881. Lynwood was founded as an agricultural community by pioneers John Copley and his wife Eliza McDowell Copley on February 17, 1887. They named it after Lynbrook Manor which they had just moved from upstate New York where John had been working as a surveyor for George Stephenson & Son Co.. In 1893 the couple built a home that still stands today called " PT House" at 5235 E Stroudsburg Rd #A1B2C3D4E5F6G7H8I9J10K11L12M13N14O15P16Q17R18S19T20U21V22W23X24Y25Z". The first post office opened in Lynwood on March 1st, 1896 and remained open until 1951 when it closed due to competition from Bakersfield during that time being second largest town in California with over 2 million people. In 1911 there were 9 businesses with 30 employees including four general stores/merchants and six hotels/motels along U Street (now known as Katella Avenue) between Pico Boulevard and I-880 near Los Angeles International Airport. Businesses included: Abel & Helms Clothing Store (now Macy's), Armour Hardware Store (now Sears), Bankers Trust Company (now Wells Fargo), Ford dealership (later Kaiser Aluminum Company), grocery store run by Mrs Bechtel and two saloons: Gophers Barbecue Inn (later Red Lobster) - now owned by Sodexo Restaurants Inc., Liberty Hotel - now known as Towne Center Casino Resort - Now Home Brewed Spirits LLC In 1916 three mills horsepower each were installed at Alma School Dam No 7 near present day Westgate Drive behind First Baptist Church showing how important waterpower may have been back then for this area with Mountaintop Lake supplying most of their needs like irrigation systems etc... however these mills have since gone out of business or been demolished
