A few years later, it annexed portions of University City (now Compton) and South Gate (now Carson) to become another municipality with its current name: Compton-Lynwood. Lynwood is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 8,512 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. Lynwood is named after Lyndhurst, England. The first people to live in what is now Lynwood were the Ohlone Indians who came from Northern California in 1821 and built their own village on a hilltop about two miles east of present-day downtown Lynwood. In 1846, Mexicanos attacked and burned down Ohlone Village and took all the Indians with them—the last known Native American surrenderees in California. In 1861, prospectors discovered gold here and by 1865 lynching had become an annual event anywhere between this small town and Bakersfield due to various rumors of gold discoveries scattered throughout Kern County at that time. Californio Normandie founded his own printing press here in 1863; it became one of the most important papers published in early Southern California because it helped spread news of large finds across linguistic barriers (Spanish speakers reported finding rich gold deposits near Stockton while English speakers found nothing). Gold fever ran high as mines started up all over southern Kern County during this period; many people died workin' these new fields including several who lost their lives building railways out near Needles along the old Spanish Trail which linked San Francisco with Los Angeles
