Lynwood, California (population: 25,000) is a city in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the western edge of the city limits of Beverly Hills and shares boundaries with Hollywood to the north and east. To its south lies Westwood. The name "Lynwood" originated from a place called Lynden Heights in nearby Sherman Oaks. In 1907, when this area was annexed by Los Angeles, residents began to call their new community Lynwood because of how clear and blue the sky was at night. The history of Lynwood begins with two families who settled there in 1887: Jens Ludwigsen and his wife Anna Pappas Ludwigsen. They built a home on what is now Elm Street near Western Avenue. One daughter, Lillian Ebright Ludwigsen (1892-1964), became an American artist and sculptor living in New York City during World War II before returning to live in California after the war. Her husband John Douglas MacArthur (1912-1965) also lived in Lynwood for many years until his death there in 1965. Other early settlers included Wilhelm Auerbach (1866-1922), who ran a grocery store on Western Avenue; Nellie Blythe (1893-1969), an actress; Harry Wexler (1896-1968), an insurance agent; Alfred Suter (1902-1988), manager of Paramount Studios; and Arthur Ashe Sr., son of tennis superstar Arthur Ashe Jr., who played golf at local courses until he died at age 90 years old in 1984. In 1923, Wernher von Braun founded Jet Propulsion Laboratory here as part of Pasadena's burgeoning aerospace industry. Von Braun later moved his lab to UCLA where he continued developing space technologies until his death in 2006 aged 92 years old
