In the early 1920s, when Madera was still a small agricultural town of just over 2,000 people, the Madera Air Force Base was only one small part of California's largest air force. The other parts of the state's large military establishment were at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson and Mojave AFB in Joshua Tree National Park. The California Air National Guard's first unit trained here on October 1, 1922. It was called "Airmen from Madera" and flew its first mission on November 3rd. On January 15th, 1924 the base became a permanent installation with three squadrons assigned: "Madero Airmen". After World War II ended, various units were stationed here including the 329th Troop Carrier Wing (later 8th Airlift Wing), which arrived in 1951; the 521st Bomb Squadron (later 9th Bomb Wing) which arrived in 1957; and then again in 1966 with elements of both wings flying C-130 Hercules aircraft from Davis-Monthan AFB to support American involvement in Vietnam. In 1969 ground facilities for an air traffic control tower and maintenance hangar were built adjacent to Majestic Field for use by IAF units flying into Yosemite National Park during winter months. As federal funding dried up after dissolution of NATO following Gulf War I, restrictions placed upon USAF activity at Davis-Monthan began to take effect beginning in 1965 – planes could not be parked or unloaded anywhere withinDOF limits without prior written authorization; fuel could not be used inside DoD buildings or tanker depots without advance notice and payment for services rendered; all personnel must wear uniforms appropriate to their rank and position; visiting fighter pilots had to obtain special permission to land at MADERA while on tour and meet members of staff only if they were accompanied by an accredited representative from a media outlet such as The Los Angeles Times or The San Francisco Examiner who would provide press credentials.; combat sorties could no longer be flown unless escorted by F-4 Phantom jets providing air cover for ground forces engaged in Operation Alluring Arms against Viet Cong insurgents operating within DoD property outside normal USAF airspace.; fighter crews assigned here generally rotated home every 6 weeks instead of every 3 months as required by regulations promulgated after World War II ; all aircraft except those used for scientific research are gone now save two former Cessna 182Ps that serve as museum pieces . . . Withdrawal from DOD inventory followeduch that No Fighter Wing budged from its perch atop Mt Whitney until March 14, 1993 whenactivities recommenced at Davis Monthan AFB ..... Withdrawal came suddenly due to budgetary constraints brought about by Presidents Reagan & George H W Bush Sr.'s efforts to modernize U.S defense posture.. [Reagan] directed Director Patrick Shanahan to initiate changes that would result in reductions at MADERA … since it was determined that MADERA should act primarily as an aerial refueling station capable of supporting Tactical Air Command’s bombers rather than engage enemy targets….. [Bush Sr.] also announced plans called America First amendment which mandated increased spending on Defense Department programs…. This led directly to the closure/relocation of Davis Monthan AFB effective September 30 1977......... Since its closure many old structures have been destroyed or converted into housing units…most notably Majestic Field where many years ago more than 100 Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters patrolled freely……Today there is barely enough space left even for parking these airplanes…………..Madera residents continue their tradition of giving back though hosting community events such as music festivals etc……………………………………….. Air Force troops deployed here during WWII included: "Madero Airmen" squadron Epsilon Delta Mu Alpha 1942 - 1945 There has never been another deployment like this! TheseAF troops went above AND beyond what is expected simply because they loved their country!

However, during World War IIMadera was bombed by German bombers which destroyed much of the town’s infrastructure including many homes and businesses. The bombing forced retirements among many local residents and led to a decrease in population throughout the 1940s until it peaked at around 810 in 1950. Since then, growth has been minimal with only a few minor decreases in population throughout various censuses conducted since 2000 . Today, Madera remains an important rural community with a strong agriculture sector that employs many locals including ranchers, farmers and chefs
