The history of Madera dates back to 1859 when it was founded as an agricultural town by John Galt and his brother Uriah Galt on a rancho called Rancho San Francisco de la Cañada Blanca (now part of the City of Richmond). In 1863 and 1865, Madera became the capital of Contra Costa County because it had been chosen as the site for county seat by Governor John Goodwin Montgomery. In 1872, madero Elijah White discovered oil at Red Bluff Oil Field east of town and began production on his own small oil rig. By 1898 production had reached 100 barrels/day with annual output reaching 2 million barrels. In 1906 white merged his company with Empire Oil Company to form North American Petroleum Corporation; NAPD would later merge with Texaco in 1911 to form Unocal Corporation before finally being purchased by Mobil in 1970. A post office called "Madera" was established in 1859, but no mail ever came through due to Indian attacks on Mission San Francisco de Asís (the only post office in that name) until 1862 when Alameda Mail Service started delivering mail frommadero to Oakland via ferryboats across Lake Merritt In 1870s there were several attempts at creating a railroad from downtown Madera northward along Dry Creek bed but all failed due to opposition from cattle ranchers who opposed any railroads coming into their piece of land
