When Madera, California, was founded in 1867, it was one of the most remote spots on Earth. The only way to get there was by sailing around Cape Horn. That didn't stop settlers from coming though. In fact, Madera grew so rapidly that in 1875 the town name was changed to Sierraville because it had outgrown Madera. Even today, Sierraville is a small community with a few hundred residents. But back then things were different. BecauseMadera lay at the base of the Andes Mountains and had no access to water or electricity, coffee beans were all that people could get their hands on. The first coffee roasters in Madera came about 10 years after the town's founding when two men named Hiram Powers and George Hutton started Roasting & Brewing Co. They roasted and brewed coffee until Prohibition made it illegal to produce or sell coffee between 1922 and 1933. 2 Then in 1938 another group of entrepreneurs named John Sumpter bought Roasting & Brewing Co., making Madera its first commercial roaster again (the last time this happened until 1978). John Sumpter continued running the business until his death in 1986, leaving behind an amazing legacy of high-quality coffees that continues TODAY! His plants are still operational today and continue to roast world-class coffees using only whole bean beans (no processed oils or artificial flavors).

Mining operations began around here during both Victorian times (1850s-1900s) and World War II (1941-1945). With increased transportation accessibility came better irrigation systems which led to more crop production; consequently, Madera has become one of Californias most industrialized cities since its incorporation as a city in 1907. The commercial center for this growing industrial area has been redeveloped over time into what is now known as Downtown Madera—a vibrant district characterized by high-end dining establishments and several high-rise apartment buildings that flank Market Street corridor between North First Street and University Avenue NW.—one block south of US 101 freeway exit 8B off Interstate 10 near downtown Fresno’s main square (Civic Center Park) where many events are hosted including state government meetings and local agricultural fairs along with art exhibitions throughout the year including various gatherings/festivals throughout November each year like Oktoberfest or Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony etc., Trader Vic’s Chinese Restaurant next door to Joe’s Pizza across University Ave NW serves up Americanized Chinese food items right next to Sunkist water bottles for all you thirsty students!

By 1913, all major businesses had introduced electric espresso machines into their stores, which made choosing your own café much easier than ever before.
