Afterward he returned home but continued working on his claim until 1880 when governmental officials granted him title to most ofcentral California! In 1876-77 US Geological Survey Menlo Park Drilling Expedition visitedmadERA searching for oil resources while under contract fromthe General Land Office under Abraham Lincoln as part of Ulysses S Grant’slands policy program!! This well drilling operation ledto later discovery at Willits Field off Highway 1 just northofEureka harbor!!! In addition, during those years madERA also saw extensive vineyards established by farmers such as Michael Reese whose familyoperated three wineries: Falstaff-Lagunitas-Reese (1885), Robert Mondavi-Cabernet Sauvignon (1888),and Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1893). By 1910 only one familyowned winery remained operational: Chateau Margaux!. During World War II some munitions were produced at madERA including shell casings usedin North Africa etc.. However today much less evidence remains associated withMadera than does earlier mining activity here!!
