Madera, California is a town located in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 9,854 at the 2010 census. The name Madera is Spanish for "mad cow" and has been given to the town because of its proximity to mad cow disease research laboratories. The first Europeans to visit Madera were Mexicans who had passed through the area on their way to Northern California. In 1821, a party led by Mariano Vallejo explored what is now Madera and named it after his home province of Mexico City. Madera post office was established in 1827. The first store in the town was opened by Wm Hite and Fenton Moody in 1858. In 1872, Gold Rush miners arrived in search of gold and found many small mining towns along the route they were traveling. One such small mining community was calledplacerville because it lay near Placerville Creek which supplied water to nearby mines. In 1886, when irrigation systems were being developed across San Joaquin County, large quantities of watermelons became available for cultivation in what are now parts of Orinda and Union City due to surface runoff from hills that loomed aboveMaderatown during winter months when snowpack was low.
